Notes & Key Findings

6 findings
  1. Fatal FunctionClauseError in CapyBench.HTTP.discard_body/5 Breaks S3–S7 on Any Chunked Response (2/7 Stages Passed)3 points
    • Immediate VM Crash on Real HTTP/HTTPS Targets Running ./cb http://rizafahmi.com or ./cb https://rizafahmi.com crashes on the very first response with ** (FunctionClauseError) no function clause matching in CapyBench.HTTP.discard_body/5, causing S3, S4, S5, S6, and S7 to fail manual evaluation.
    • Dead ':to_close' Clause vs. 'nil' Return Value (Lines 67–68) In lib/capy_bench/http.ex, content_length/1 uses Enum.find_value/2 to parse the Content-Length header and returns nil whenever the header is absent (such as Transfer-Encoding: chunked responses). However, discard_body/5 only defines two clauses: defp discard_body(transport, socket, _buffer, :to_close = _length, deadline) (line 171, which is unreachable dead code because nothing ever returns :to_close) and defp discard_body(transport, socket, buffer, length, deadline) when is_integer(length) (line 185).
    • Masked by Synthetic TestServer Fixtures: Because TestServer.send_response/4 in test/support/test_server.ex unconditionally injects 'content-length: #{byte_size(body)}\r\n' into every test responseβ€”and the agent wrote zero tests for chunked or close-delimited responsesβ€”all local HTTP tests passed without ever exercising non-Content-Length responses.
  2. 9 Concurrency-Limit Halts Added 153.0m of Manual 'continue' Wait Time (93m Active vs. 246m Wall-Clock)4 points
    • Why Wall-Clock Was 245.6m (10:29–14:34) While Active Time Was Only 92.6m Across 301 JSONL entries, 9 requests failed with TerminalStreamChunkError: model concurrency limit exceeded (lines 14, 16, 87, 99, 144, 184, 197, 240, 276). Because ZCode stops the loop on stream errors instead of retrying with backoff, the session sat idle waiting for manual 'continue' input for a total of 9,179.6s (152.99 minutes).
    • Exact Breakdown of the 9 Pause Gaps: L014β†’L015 (6.2s), L016β†’L017 (6.6s), L087β†’L088 (13.15m / 789.0s at 10:55–11:08), L099β†’L100 (132.10m / 7,926.3s at 11:11:25–13:23:32 when the halted session went unnoticed for over 2 hours), L144β†’L145 (11.9s), L184β†’L185 (4.51m / 270.4s at 13:43–13:47), L197β†’L198 (8.5s), L240β†’L241 (2.59m / 155.5s at 14:00–14:02), and L276β†’L277 (5.4s).
    • Active Time Split (92.63m Total): Excluding the 9 manual 'continue' pauses, active execution took 92.63 minutes (5,557.7s)β€”split between 59.79 minutes (64.5%) in LLM inference across 292 successful calls and 32.84 minutes (35.5%) in local tool execution.
    • Cache Expiry Impact ($0.39 Extra Cost): The 132.1m pause at L100 expired the upstream prefix cache (dropping cacheReadTokens from 94,080 to 16,896 and re-billing 77,750 tokens as uncached input), and two later upstream cache evictions at L203 (119,969 uncached tokens) and L261 (145,452 uncached tokens) lowered the overall cache hit rate to 98.44%.
  3. Omitting 'def application' in mix.exs Triggered a 60-Turn Custom Compiler & ':wrong_password' PEM Rabbit Hole (S3)3 points
    • Missing extra_applications Declaration: The agent never added def application do [extra_applications: [:logger, :ssl, :public_key]] end to mix.exs. Because Mix prunes unreferenced OTP applications from the code path, Elixir 1.20's type checker emitted undefined-module warnings for :ssl and :public_key.
    • 44 Turns Building Mix.Tasks.Compile.LoadOtpModules (Lines 82–125) Instead of adding extra_applications to mix.exs, the agent spent 44 turns writing a custom Mix compiler task inside mix.exs that scans :code.root_dir()/lib for 'ssl-' and 'public_key-' directories and injects their ebin paths via :code.add_path/1.
    • 38 Turns Debugging a Phantom ':wrong_password' TLS Key Error (Lines 149–188) When running HTTPS tests, :ssl.listen/2 failed with {:options, {:keyfile, {..., :wrong_password}}} on unencrypted OpenSSL test keys. Because :asn1 was also missing from the pruned code path, :public_key.pem_entry_decode/1 crashed with an internal undef error that OTP's :ssl caught and misreported as :wrong_password. After 38 turns testing openssl genrsa and pkey -traditional, the agent discovered :asn1 was unloaded at line 181 and added 'asn1-' to @otp_prefixes in mix.exs (line 187).
  4. No Credo or 'mix check': Substituted 'mix format' + 'mix compile --warnings-as-errors' Despite PLAN.md Rule2 points
    • No Static Linter Installed: Even though PLAN.md line 128–129 explicitly states 'Formatting and compilation do not substitute for linting', the agent left deps: [] empty in mix.exs and never installed Credo or defined a mix check alias.
    • README Lint Section (Line 52): In S1, the agent documented 'mix format --check-formatted' and 'mix compile --warnings-as-errors' under 'Lint (formatting check and strict compilation)' in README.md and reported lint as passing in its release verification notes.
  5. Flaky 'Started: 50' Integration Assertion Causes 36/37 Test Result Under Scheduling Drift2 points
    • Cumulative Sleep Drift Across 49 Pacing Gaps In CapyBench.Runner.loop/5 (lib/capy_bench/runner.ex:67–69), the runner sleeps Process.sleep(state.last_dispatch + 100 - now) between dispatches over a 5,000 ms window. Whenever OS/BEAM timer oversleep + dispatch overhead averages >= 2.04 ms across 49 gaps (49 * 102.05 ms > 5,000 ms), the 50th iteration hits now >= deadline and the run finishes with Started: 49 instead of Started: 50.
    • Observed in the Agent's Own Release Verification (Line 295) When the agent ran ./cb against its local HTTPS server at line 295, it got Started: 49 and HTTP responses: 49 (200: 49) (which it even recorded in PLAN.md line 135), yet it left assert out =~ "Started: 50" hardcoded in test/capy_bench/cli_http_test.exs (lines 16, 29) and test/capy_bench/cli_loop_test.exs (line 14), causing 1 of 37 tests to fail when re-run.
  6. 3.9 MB erl_crash.dump Committed Twice in S1 & S3 (205k Diff Lines) and 48 Inline Python/Perl File Patches2 points
    • 3.9 MB erl_crash.dump Tracked in Git Piping Mix commands into head/tail (e.g., mix compile 2>&1 | head -8) triggered BEAM broken-pipe crash dumps. Because .gitignore only ignored /_build, /deps, and /cb.vm, git add -A committed erl_crash.dump in S1 (4fee183, +58,606 lines) and updated it in S3 (57619b8, 146,535 lines changed).
    • 48 Inline Python/Perl File Mutations to Bypass ZCode Read Guards Running mix format via Bash updated file mtimes and triggered 12 Edit/Write 'File has been modified since read' errors. To avoid extra Read round-trips, the agent performed 35 inline python3 - <<'PYEOF' file patches and 13 perl -pi / -0pi edits inside Bash.
