Notes & Key Findings

7 findings
  1. Max-Effort Diminishing Returns: 95% Costlier ($1.70 vs. $0.87), 55% Slower (110m vs. 71m) & 6/7 Slices Verified (S5 Incomplete)4 points
    • $1.70 Total Cost, 110m Duration & 6/7 Verified Slices Running GLM-5.3-Flash with effort: "max" passed 63/63 local ExUnit tests in 110 minutes (07:39–09:29) for $1.70 ($1.7007), but failed live S5 verification on ./cb http://rizafahmi.com (6/7 slices verified). While still 86.8% cheaper than GLM-5.3 High ($12.90, 96m, 7/7), effort: "max" cost nearly 2x as much as GLM-5.3-Flash High ($0.87, 71m, 7/7) and 55% more than GLM-5.3-Flash Low ($1.10, 111m, 6/7).
    • Why Max Effort Cost 2x High Effort: Emitting 1.51x more thinking tokens (137.3k vs. 91.0k in High) and taking 104 more LLM turns (294 vs. 190) pushed the context window to a 302.3k-token peak (26,838 → 302,319 tokens) and doubled cumulative cached input reads from 25.44M to 51.42M tokens ($1.54 in cache reads alone at a 99.39% cache hit rate).
    • 37.2 Minutes (33.8% of Run) Lost to Three Subprocess Hangs Three test-suite stalls—an infinite until wait wrapper loop in S2 (5.8m, lines 68–73), an unstarted :ssl / TestServer stall in S3 (8.8m, lines 130–132), and a negative monotonic-time sleep bug in S4 (22.6m, lines 192–202)—forced 7 background TaskOutput/TaskStop calls and accounted for nearly the entire 39-minute gap vs. GLM-5.3-Flash High.
    • 100% Stream Reliability Across All 294 Calls Every single LLM turn succeeded on attempt: 1 with zero SSE stream drops or rate-limit retries.
  2. S5 Verification Crash on './cb http://rizafahmi.com': Chunked-Body Parser Fails with CaseClauseError: [""]3 points
    • Immediate Crash on Live Chunked 301 Redirect (Exit Code 1) Running ./cb http://rizafahmi.com (which returns a Cloudflare HTTP/1.1 301 Moved Permanently response with Transfer-Encoding: chunked) crashes immediately with ** (CaseClauseError) no case clause matching: [""] in CapyBench.HTTP.read_line/4 (lib/capy_bench/http.ex:354) instead of recording 3xx status counts and exiting 0.
    • Hallucinated [:nomatch] Clause in CapyBench.HTTP.read_line/4 In read_line/4 (called by read_chunk_size/3 -> discard_chunked/3), the agent matched case :binary.split(pending, "\r\n") against [head, rest] and [:nomatch]. Because :binary.split/2 returns a single-element list [pending] (such as [""]) rather than [:nomatch] when no delimiter is present—and because its recursive call also passed <<>> instead of newly received socket bytes—any chunked HTTP response whose next CRLF is not already buffered in pending crashes the VM.
    • Missed by Local TestServer Suite: Because CapyBench.TestServer only emitted Content-Length responses and never tested Transfer-Encoding: chunked, all 63 local ExUnit tests passed while live chunked responses fail S5.
  3. S4 Negative Monotonic-Time Bug (now = -576460751513): Process.sleep(576 Billion ms) & a 22.6-Minute Test Hang3 points
    • Seeding next_allowed at 0 Passed Fake-Clock Tests but Slept for 18.3 Years on Real BEAM Time (Lines 179–202): In lib/capy_bench/runner.ex, CapyBench.Runner.run/2 initialized its pacing timestamp to 0 (loop(cfg, initial, 0)). Because unit tests in test/capy_bench/runner_test.exs used a fake clock starting at 1000, now (1000) < next_allowed (0) was false and all deterministic tests passed. Under CapyBench.Clock.real(), System.monotonic_time(:millisecond) returned -576,460,751,513 (BEAM's arbitrary negative monotonic origin); since -576,460,751,513 < 0, the runner called Process.sleep(0 - (-576,460,751,513)) = Process.sleep(576,460,751,513) (18.27 years) before dispatching its first request.
    • 22.6-Minute Background Test Stall (Lines 192–198) When the agent ran mix format && timeout 400 mix test 2>&1 | tail -5 at line 192 (08:30:22), every CLI test spawned a ./cb subprocess that hung until CLITestRunner's 20s Task.await timeout expired, leaving orphaned cb.escript processes behind. The agent waited through the initial 430s Bash timeout and three blocking TaskOutput polls (420s at line 193, 300s at line 194, and 180s at line 196) before checking ps at line 198 (08:53:06), spotting 13 stuck cb.escript processes, printing now=-576460751513 at line 201, and fixing loop(cfg, initial, started_at) at line 202.
    • Fixing Cumulative Wake-Time Jitter & Sequential Stall Acceptor Blocking (Line 206) In a 99.3s, 8,042-token reasoning turn at line 206, the agent diagnosed why the untrusted-HTTPS loop test started only 49 requests instead of 50: chaining next_allowed = dispatch_at + 100 compounded ~2ms of OS sleep jitter across 49 sleeps and pushed the 50th dispatch past the 5,000ms deadline. Switching to intended-slot stepping (max(prev_slot + 100, dispatch_at + 100)) and spawning per-connection handlers in CapyBench.TestServer fixed all S4 boundary tests.
  4. 48-Turn S1 PTY Signal Odyssey, a False-Positive SIGUSR2 Probe & S2's 'until wait' Busy-Loop Hang (5.8m Lost)3 points
    • 48 Turns of Empirical Signal & Terminal Probing in S1 (Lines 5–52, ~10.5m) Before finalizing S1, the agent built 10 Erlang/Elixir probes in /tmp—hitting 3 Erlang syntax errors at lines 11–14 from writing Elixir atom syntax {:exit_status, Status} inside .erl files—to prove that OTP 28 rejects :os.set_signal(:sigint, :handle) with :badarg, port children run with TPGID 0 in separate process groups, and Nix-built BEAM 28 on macOS has no controlling terminal (/dev/tty fails with ENXIO even inside a PTY).
    • Why S1's SIGUSR2 Probe Passed by Accident (Line 51 vs. S7 Lines 270–276) At line 50, /tmp/cbprobe/cb ran trap 'kill -USR2 "$pid"' INT followed by a single unlooped wait "$pid". When ^C arrived in the PTY at line 51, /bin/sh's interrupted wait immediately returned 128 + 2 = 130 while kill -USR2 "$pid" actually killed the BEAM by default OS disposition (signal 31) before Cbprobe.SigHandler ever executed. Only in S7 (lines 270–276), when ./cb's wait loop waited for cb.escript and reported 'User defined signal 2: 31' (exit 159), did the agent discover that :os.set_signal(:sigusr2, :handle) is required so SIGUSR2 routes to :erl_signal_server instead of killing the VM.
    • S2 'until wait' 100%-CPU Infinite Loop on Non-130 Exit Codes (Lines 54–73, 5.8m Lost) When writing ./cb in S1 (line 54), the agent used until wait "$pid"; do status=$?; [ "$status" -eq 130 ] && break; done. In S1 (--help exiting 0), wait "$pid" succeeded immediately. In S2's red phase (line 68), the first CLI test exited 1; until wait looped again on the already-reaped PID, which in POSIX /bin/sh returns 127 (!= 130) immediately, spinning forever and hanging mix test across a 120s Bash call and two TaskOutput polls (60s + 120s, lines 69–70) until killed via TaskStop at line 71 and fixed with a kill -0 "$pid" loop at line 73.
  5. S3 TestServer Traps: 8.8-Minute Stall, Spawn Closure self() Bug & Credo Enforcement (2 Commits)3 points
    • Credo Strict Enforced Across S1–S7 (Correcting Draft Note) Unlike the GLM-5.3-Flash High run (which skipped Credo), this Max-effort run added {:credo, "~> 1.7", only: [:dev], runtime: false} in S1 (lines 58–60, after briefly stashing and popping its dirty tree at lines 56–57), documented mix credo --strict in README.md, and verified all 7 slices against Credo.
    • 8.8-Minute S3 Test Run & Logger Stdout Pollution (Lines 130–150) Running mix test test/capy_bench/cli_request_test.exs at line 130 took 527 seconds (8.8m, requiring a 300s TaskOutput wait at line 131) with 11/12 tests failing because test/test_helper.exs had not started :ssl in the test VM and OTP's default logger printed TLS handshake alert notices to stdout. After :logger.update_handler_config(:default, :config, %{type: :standard_error}) failed with {:error, {:illegal_config_change, ...}} at line 150, the agent removed and re-added the :default handler on :standard_error.
    • Elixir spawn_link(fn -> ... self() end) Closure Trap (Lines 154–161) In test/support/test_server.ex, init/1 spawned its acceptor with spawn_link(fn -> accept_loop(..., self()) end). Because self() inside the closure evaluated in the spawned child process at runtime, the acceptor sent :connection messages to its own mailbox (message_queue_len: 1) rather than the TestServer GenServer, causing TestServer.connections(server) to return 0 until me = self() was bound before spawn_link at line 161.
  6. 4.74 MB erl_crash.dump Committed in S3 (251420d) via 'head -30' Broken Pipe & 'git add -A'2 points
    • Broken Pipe Crash Dump at Line 124 (08:08:10) Piping mix compile --warnings-as-errors 2>&1 | head -30 closed the pipe early while the BEAM was writing compiler warnings to :standard_error, triggering an unhandled :badarg during boot termination and dumping a 4,735,599-byte (155,619-line) erl_crash.dump to the repo root.
    • Semicolon Chain Committed Both erl_crash.dump and Unfixed Credo Findings (Lines 167–172) Because .gitignore only excluded /_build/, /deps/, and /cb.escript, running mix format --check-formatted && mix credo --strict 2>&1 | grep ... | head -3; git add -A && git commit ... at line 167 committed the 4.74 MB erl_crash.dump in 251420d and ignored Credo's non-zero exit behind the pipe and semicolon. Upon noticing 3 strict Credo findings at lines 168–171 (redundant with clause in test/support/test_server.ex and nested cond/case depth in lib/capy_bench/http.ex), the agent fixed them and created a 9th commit (4817a24, "S3: address credo strict findings") at line 172.
  7. ZCode File-State Guard Friction: 10 Edit/Write Rejections, Only 11 Read Calls & 29 Inline Python/Sed Patches2 points
    • 9 'File has been modified since read' Errors & 1 Binary Encoding Error Running mix format or inline scripts via Bash invalidated ZCode's mtime tracker, causing 6 Edit calls (lines 75, 126, 151, 161, 207, 220) and 3 Write calls (lines 144, 188, 236) to fail with "File has been modified since read", plus 1 Write error at line 53 ("Unsupported or binary text encoding") when attempting to overwrite the compiled ./cb escript binary with a shell script.
    • 28 Inline Python Patches & 11 Total Read Calls To avoid extra Read turns after formatting, the agent issued only 11 Read calls across the entire 294-turn session and instead performed 28 file mutations via inline python3 - <<'EOF' scripts (plus 1 sed -i edit) inside Bash—including a regex overreach at line 121 that accidentally rewrote :gen_tcp.send/2 to :gen_tcp.transport_send/2 before being reverted at line 122.
